I agree 1000 percent. I’m not an expert at how these ECU’s work but if I plug it into my ski that has no problems at all and it still posts the same error something is going on that’s unique to that ECU. I guess it could be falsely reporting the P1656 error because the key I have is wrong or the display isn’t married to it. But these are the things I don’t know about these ECUs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. by the way, I’m considering buying the BUDS hardware and software.

Do a Google search SeaDoo P1656, you'll find some helpful info on that code. It seems to be a DESS post/key error. I replaced an ECU that the dealer said was bad on a ski I used to have and they were wrong, my ECU wasn't the problem.
I appreciate the response. Like I said, I have a perfectly running ski that shows no faults. When I remove the ECU from that ski and replace it with the ECU in question I get the same fault code on the ski as I do on the ski that the ECU in question came out of in the first place. Both skis are the same year and same model. Also, the ski that the questionable ECU came out of shows no faults when I put in a spare 215HP ECU. In fact, the ski starts and runs on the 215 ECU with no faults. It’s not the DESS post. I have researched this a lot already. If the DESS post was shorted ( especially the data line) the ski wouldn’t start regardless of the ECU condition.
