05 GTI Restored Wiring to Factory Schematic -- Still Dead

Hello,

I am new to the forum and appreciate the access to a lot of great information. I have a 2005 GTI with an electrical issue that I thought I could overcome with a rebuild of the wiring harness using the Shop Manual schematic. Components test out fine and I have a good MPEM with programmed keyed. I have done continuity checks on all the circuits in the harness, but when I apply power from the battery I get clicking in the cut out coil, no beeps, and if I press the starter button twice I get the gas / oil gage to move. That is it.

Is there a change out there or an alternated wiring scheme? Thanks, George

What engine do you have? Is it a RFI ??

It is the 717 with carbs.

Did you rebuild a complete wiring harness?

Pushing the start button without the key inserted should give power to the gauges for 33 seconds.
check power to your beeper, it might not be working properly.
check your DESS POST and Start/Stop switch.

I had a later model GTI that had TWO positive wires that went to the battery post.

I am assuming your holder relay is in the rear of the ski on the top cover of the rear electric box? Check those fuses there.

Thank you. I ordered a DESS Post today. I also have a wire harness coming as well. I did redo the wire harness, but the AMP connector had a broken tab and while the harness passed continuity checks, I am concerned the pins are not making good connect.

Where did the second red from the battery go?

There was a Ring Terminal and it went across the ski to the MPEM. That might have been one-off set up on just one a ski I had. Just throwing that out there.

Hey All,

Here is where I am at with the 05 GTI and I hope someone has seen this before. If I wire the ski exactly like the schematic in the Shop Manual, I get nothing with the FOB on the Post. If I ground the Black and Purple wire from the Cut Off Relay in the Rear Electrical Box, I get 2 Beeps after pressing the start switch then when I press it again, I can get the motor to turn over with spark so the MPEM is working. Could this be the Cut Off Relay? I have checked all the wiring for continuity and high resistance. All of it checks out. I feel I am close to solving this problem, but this has me stumped. Thank you, George
