02 GTX DI Maintenance light on and dies after 20 seconds of running

I am looking at an 02 DI with under 130 hours on the ski. The ski is in nice shape, and has had the fuel pump replaced, and typical maintenance done (fluids, plugs, rave valves cleaned and battery replaced).

The ski looks nice based on the pics he sent me. All the gauges work.

Now for the bad....

The owner let a friend use it, and it came back with the maintenance light on. It starts and runs, beeps, and shuts off after 20 seconds.

I am thinking the regulator is shot causing the maintenance light coming on, but I am not sure what is causing the engine to shut off after 20 seconds.

What could cause the engine to die like that?

I am planning to look at it next weekend when I go south for Thanksgiving.

I want to check compression, and I believe it should be around 140 with the plugs removed, and throttle open. Am I correct thinking the 140 PSI?

What else should I look for, and test? I wish I had a CanDoo to read the fault code.

He wants close to 2k including a single ski trailer.

I am thinking around $1500, but I am not sure if he will bite.

DI skis nearly REQUIRE the Candoo...

The fuel pump pressure is very critical. Something like 117 psi at idle for example.

150 PSI is near perfect, 140 is good, 120 is time for work in the near future.

I've had 2 2002 DI's and yes you MUST have a Candoo so factor that $400 into the price. They are great machines when running right but a PITA to diagnose if not impossible without that Candoo. They will typically have 3 issues - fuel pump, battery and rectifier. Battery must be strong and you can almost rest assured at some point you will need a rectifier. If you use the 4tec version that will pretty much solve that issue. Those two issues are fairly cheap. The fuel pump is more complicated. I always had one "standing by" but was fortunate that I never needed that in the 2 years I owned them. The only issues I had were the batteries and rectifiers on both. Gas consumption is very good as well. But factor in that Candoo for sure. If you run it to a dealer for a code after 2-3 visits plus waiting time you've paid for the Candoo.

The current owner has replaced the fuel pump, so I "should" be good on that. He did not state he replaced the filters or regulator, so I am thinking those are first.

Looking online, I do not see how to replace the inline filter since it has hoses attached from the manufacture, and is unavailable online.

I have thought about the candoo, so that is on the "list"

Most replace the fuel pump with a "more affordable" pump. If so, it is likely junk. You can NOT guess, you need to get a pressure gauge inline to see what it is doing.

I am going to talk to the owner in person and see if "he" or a "seadoo" dealer replaced the pump. I will be looking at purchasing a gauge, or building one if I can. I would prefer to build one, but I do not know if the fittings are standard or some exotic fitting.

This will all depend if I buy the GTX. The more I price parts (injectors, pumps, etc) I am thinking closer to $1500 but I dont know if he will bite.

After you factor in the Candoo, at minimum, plus whatever might be wrong with it and at this point who knows, I would stick to your guns at $1500 max. Something to consider as well is that typical 951's usually need a rebuild at around 200 hours so factor that in in terms of seasons before a rebuild is required.

Well I went head first into this. I was able to snag it for 1400 with a 2003 trailer in nice shape. The ski do has some unannounced issues that I need to work out. Compression is 150 on the mag cylinder, and 143 on the pro cylinder.
1. Mag plug is covered in oil.
2. Hood support does not work
3. MPEM mount in the rear over the drive shafts is broken, or Mia
4. It did not die like he said when I had it in the water, I did bounce off the Rev limiter about 7100 rpm.
5. There must be a clog somewhere in the water system. When hooked to the hose, water came out the pisser. When in the water, no water came out the pisser, but one of the freeze plugs has a hole in it. It will needed to be welded. Temp alarm came on the ski, and it shutdown.
