Hi guys,

Just replaced my less than year old sbt starter (luckily it was still under warranty) however, the new one seemed to have long nuts on the end where the bracket attaches. So the bracket will not line up with the hole on the case down there. Can I get away without this bracket? I am nervous to take the starter nuts off because the studs are coming loose with them, so I am really not sure what to do. Thanks for any suggestions.

Wellllll..........

You will probably be fine without it... but because of the vibration, and the weight of the starter... you may crack the housing, or get it out of align enough to wear the gear, and output bearing. I would try to get it on if it was me.

damn... I was afraid you would say that. :p Thanks Doc, I will see if I can bend it back a little. Have you noticed the aftermarket starters not fitting quite right? That is so irritating! I wanted to replace the little nuts on the end with shorter ones so it does not push the bracket out too far, but I am really nervous to accidently pull something loose in the process.

Nope... but that's only because I refuse to install an aftermarket starter other than Gorkey. (sp?) And honestly... I don't know if they are in biz anymore. They were expensive, but were better than OEM most of the time.

I could see why you wouldnt, I think I will consider having my oem rebuilt if my others ever have an issue. Thanks again

There is a thread in the boat section asking about starters... and I told him to simply take it apart, and clean it. After he was done... it worked perfect.
