Hey Guys,

My 2001 XP idles high out of water. If I punch the throttle it comes back down slowly and doesnt return to 3000RPM(the proper idle out of water) instead it will stay around 5k to 6k.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Your motor is free wheeling. If you read the shop manual, you will see a section in there that suggests you don't rev wide open throttle. I don't remember the exact rev but you should not rev these things up while there is no load on the engine. Even a chain saw (2 stroke motor) has torque on the motor by way of the chain or a weedeater, by way of the string and head. Your motor only has a shaft and impeller, with no load. This is not good on your motor.

The idle is suppose to be set at 3k out of the water and 1500 in the water. I set my idle on everything I own, or work on, while it's in the water. I don't care what it idles at on land. It's more important that I have the necessary rpm's in the water. You can do this by removing the air box, front and back, then putting the flame arrestor back in, along with the metal band to hold it down. This will give you full access to your adjustments. Then, when your happy, put the airbox back on......

So, the idle screws are all the way down and it still idles high. Its wierd once its started the idle will start around 3000 and then rise and rise until I start worrying and shut off the engine. Could this be because it is not in water or is there something wrong
