Hey, I just got a rebuilt motor put in my 98 xp limited. I hooked everything up and it finally fired. Ran nicely for about forty seconds, then the RPMs jumped to about 6000, I pulled the kill switch and nothing happened, I pulled the spark plug wires off and still nothing, finally I pulled the gas line, and about five seconds later it stopped. Does anyone know what would cause this? Whey didn't the kill switch do anything?
Thanks to anyone that can help!

Now I a little worried to start it back up because I don't want that to happen again. Also what if this happens while I'm on the water?
Thanks again

Yes, Know that it is a runaway engine. Although I was wondering if this could ever happen while it is in the water? Also considering that the motor is brand new,(not broken in) do you think any damage has occurred?
Thanks!

Under load in water it won't happen. But it's running too lean or your idle is set too high. You should make sure the carbs and filters are clean and that you don't have an air leak from pulse line or RAVE air line or intake gaskets. The choke or throttle will kill it if it happens again.

I will change out the intake gaskets tonight, and can someone tell me where all these other lines that this guy is talking about?
Thanks so much for everyones help!!!

There is a line going from carb mounted fuel pump to crankcase and a line from the rave valves to the crankcase. A leak in those pulse lines can also let air in engine causing lean running. However most likely cause is a plugged up fuel system, especially if you still have those grey Tempo fuel lines that are famous for rotting.

Did you find the cause of the failure of the first engine?

That I don't know. Has the engine ever been submerged or taken on water. Rust is what I would think kills bearings, and lack of oil. Or they just wear out. How many hours were on it?

Long story short, I bought the ski two months ago with 47 hours on it. I rode it for about 3 hours and then the bearing went out. I really don't know much a about the previous history, although the ski was in perfect condition. I really just want to make sure that i do everything I can to prevent damage in the future.
Thanks for your help man!
