Which way for starter gear?

Pretty sure the smooth side goes out right?

No washer behind it right? I know there's 3 that goes on the other side at the cover.

You may be able to figure it out by looking at a parts diagram...

Maybe. But I also don't put 100% trust in a parts diagram after seeing how many times they have been wrong. And its not shown/described in the service manual.

According to diagram it sort of looks like clunky side goes towards the starter and smooth side near the bendix...but when I took it off and inspected the wear marks...it was the other way around according to the wear marks on the gear. So was it previously opened and installed incorrectly...or is the diagram wrong?

Looking at several other images online, and searching for this part on ebay...it appears the diagram is wrong.
