Where do I clamp a 97 GTI for towing? I know it's a hose. Can someone post a pic with the right one marked? We are heading out in a week and I want to be to be ready if we need to tow.

By the way what's the worse thing if you don't clamp before tow in water?

I don't have a picture but it's the hose from the pump to the inlet of the motor, if you look at the top of the motor the inlet hose is the one that connect to the small arrow pointing toward the front of the motor.

If you don't clamp this hose when towing and you tow at over 5mph you can hydrolock your motor.

I took a picture of the line to clamp. You'll notice there's a clamp on the line, I just leave it on the line loose, if and when I need it I just tighten it up.

I can't really see the clamp in the picture, it's too dark to tell what it looks like.

You can use a big hose pincher or a smaller vise grip clamp with straight jaws. Mark the correct hose line with duct tape or some way, so you know which one. The intake line will be marked on the top of the engine. The arrow points to the front of the ski. Trace it back with your hand, make sure you mark the right one. I have my clamping device in the back bucket under the rear seat section. If Your in the water it's the place to have it.

One solution is take the clamp off the hose, put an old spark plug in the hose and tighten it with clamp :) I believe br8es fits the hose nicely :)

One of the experts would need to chime in here to tell me I am blowing smoke because my only experience is with the 580 and 720 engines.

Looking at the service manuals, and specifically the cooling system, of the various engines the cooling flow is different. Some have a "T" in the cooling circuit from the pump to the works; one output from the "T" goes to the exhaust system and one output from the "T" goes to the engine. Ya gotta look for your specific engine. From my small experience the engine/cooling jacket is a closed system with no connection to the internal workings of the engine. It appears that the risk for getting water into the innards of the engine by towing is from the cooling to the exhaust back into the exhaust ports of the engine.

If all my blather above is correct, the best place for the clamp is between the pump and the "T", if it exists.

Yes, Lou is correct regarding the risk, but to distill the word hydrolocking down into simple terms that even I understand, it means filling up your engine with water.
