Where and how to replace the DESS

Hello,

New to the whole Sea Doo thing.

I have a 97 GTX and I think I have an intermittent connection problem with the DESS connector..

Not sure, but running it over the weekend on some very rough water, it shut off. It would start immediatley but would shut off when I gave it the throttle. When it shut off the gauge cluster would go blank.. I needed to pull the cord and it would startup immediately and then kill when I give it throttle again. It did this about 10 times in a row and then suddenly ran fine and never did it again..

Any ideas on this one?? I am thinking bad DESS connection..

My question is: How do I get a new tether that is programmed for my MPEM?

My 97 SPX did the EXACT same thing last year. Idle fine, but touch the throttle and its like you pulled the lanyard off. As with anything mechanical, start with the simplest and cheapest solution first. Try replacing your lanyard. If that doesn't work, it's time for a DESS. I replaced my DESS last year. Call your local Seadoo dealer and order a new DESS, mine was about $100 give or take a dozen dollars. It's a 2 minute fix to replace it. If it's anything like mine, there should be a large plastic nut around the DESS on the outside of the hull. Take some channel locks or large pliers and take off that nut. The DESS will then slide out underneath. Disconnect the wires, reconnect on your new DESS, insert into hole, tighten nut, and you're done. All they had to do with mine was program your lanyard to your new DESS. To my understanding, the MPEM will accept any DESS, it's the tether that needs to be programmed to the DESS in order for the machine to run. I asked them about bypassing the DESS altogether to eliminate the problem but I was told the MPEM won't tolerate that lol. Hope this helps!
