I pulled this out of a 94 XP.

My question: Is this an x motor or a standard 657?

Bore measures: 3.087"
Piston measures 3.078"

Any observations in the pics would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Both the 657 and the 657x have the same bore size.

Standard: 78mm - 3.071"
First oversize: 78.25mm - 3.081
Second oversize: 78.50mm - 3.091
According to my shop manual.

Being a 94 XP I would guess that it is an X motor, because that is what they came with from the factory.
You should be able to look on the name plate and determine the type. (your last pic showing the name plate on the mag housing.)

1994 SPX, XPI and GTX had the 657 motor
XP - 657X motor.

Yep, was able to enlarged your last pic and it is an X motor.

Probably bored to the first over size with some wear.

You have a 657X motor.
About the only thing that will interchange between the two motors is the crank, because they have the same stroke. I can't remember the exact stroke, even though I looked it up again last night at home, but they are the same.

You have X cases and jugs.
You have X model carbs.
The name plate is an X.
94XP - 657X motor.

Send it in as an X motor, because that is basically what it is.

Download a 1994 shop/repair manual and look in the technical data.

Ok, thanks again. I am looking at the SBT remans . Have you ever dealt with them before?

Nope

I know people that have and for the most part they are good. SBT didn't get to where they are today by being second rate.
There are several out there that are very good also. Your choice

Just pulled apart an SBT motor, dead pto piston, and found 1 of the cylinder bolts,(pto cylinder) wasnt tightened down...:willy_nilly:

O-yeah, cylinders are same with either X or non-X, but heads' cut different in non-X motor, and deck height on the X, is 1mm higher...
