I just purchased a 1996 GTI with a 720 engine. It runs fine but I have water coming out from under the exhaust manifold when I hook up a water hose to flush it. The water comes out where the yellow circle is on the pic. I thought there must be a bad gasket so I took the head off. None of the gaskets or seals looked like they were leaking and there was no water in the cylinders. I traced how the water makes it way through the engine and exhaust and want to know if I am understanding it. There is a water inlet on the left rear side of the head cover. The water exits the front of the head and goes through the the tuned pipe to the exhaust manifold and exits out the bottom of the manifold. I think I understand that loop but the water doesn't appear to go into the cylinder jacket. Someone had this apart previously and I am wondering if I am missing a part. Should the yellow circled area be exposed? How does water enter the cylinder Jacket? I would appreciate some help because this make no sense to me.
