water coming in after engines replaced

Just got newly rebuilt engines in my '97 Speedster, which had no leaks previously. Now the bilge fills up within 5 minutes run time.

Guy who did the work claims that the previous mechanic who replaced the wear rings used a faulty silicone sealer and wants $200 to reseal with the good stuff. I have a very bad feeling about this, since there was no water problem until he got ahold of it.

A. Does a motor replacement involve anything that would cause the leak?

B. What about the wear ring replacement? Could a poor seal job just magically come loose? We are talking about LOTS of water in a short time, not just an inch or two.

I need some good advice pronto !

Thanks..............nm

It sounds like the cooling lines aren't connected properly. You first need to know where the water is coming in from before you assume the worse. It could be leaking in from the jet pump shaft, but you really need to look it over real good.

not on that yr/mdl of boat or ski...its a simple "seal" unit, that the pump does. If anything, order the "neoprene" seal, and install it, between the pump and hull.

If you disconnect the reverse cable from bucket and steering cable from nozzle, then all you need to do, is undo the 4-17mm nuts on each pump, and thee entire untis (2 pumps), will fall off the boat. The "lip" of the wear rings stick out about 1/8in of the pumps and thats what 'seals" against the "pump support" thats, looks like its incorporated into the back of the hull. Install a neoprene seal there, if you think you need better seal for cavitation, BUT I think you need to pay closer attention to the carbon seal assy, which is located under the 2-grey covers, behind the motors. If anything, when they/mechanic installed the new engines, probably broke/chipped/cracked these ring assy's. You'll need to pull the pumps to replace them.

So, i'd pull the pumps, inspect the ring assy, make sure the "snap-ring" is in the "middle groove", (the snap-ring is located UNDER the steel collar..this collar is what, the carbon ring rides against) and re-lap the steel collar...good luck.

Also, "another" possibity/problem, is that the shims werent put back in correct order/mounts...?
