Wake 155 will not go above 40 so would it go 40 on 2 cylinders?

From my research it is most likely these 2 things:

1. Impeller/Wear Ring
2. One of the cylinders is not firing

I read about a quick test where you pull the black spark plug cap on each spark plug one at a time and see if it runs rough or will not run. Trying this the jet ski sounded fine with the 3rd spark plug cap off but wouldn't start with the 1st nor the 2nd (one off at a time) black spark plug cap removed. Hoping I did it wrong or that is not a valid test. The engine looks so like new so really think this is not the issue.

Ordered the impeller/wear ring and am hoping this takes care of the problem (did get the ski rope wrapped around the shaft but am very confident all the rope was removed successfully). I am somewhat mechanically inclined but if it is one of the cylinders not firing may have to take it in as I don't have some of the tools needed to diagnose it properly.

Before you do anything else, change all 3 spark plugs. Put in known new plugs, not some you think are good. This is a cheap first step in troubleshooting a problem like yours.

Hi-
Recently watched a tech perform a variation of that test on one of my rides. My symtoms were different than yours, but in the end it was a bad plug.
He started it up, and one at a time, pulled the white connector off the black shroud/coil. The unit started to run rough. Reattached the connector and the unit continued to run roughly. Did the same thing on #2, same result. . When he pulled #3 unit died. He said "you have a dead plug". Put a fresh plug in it, and re-ran the test. This time it ran roughly with all three plugs, but it ran.
He showed me the bad plug and it had a small caramel colored ring (burn mark) around the base of the insulator. Put it in the water and it was fine. He suggested changing them once a season. I will.

Normally, I would agree with changing the plugs first but these are new plugs (2 weeks ago). Just changed when I did the oil change.

But that is a better variation to the test I did. When I pull the connecter off the black shroud it starts beeping with long beeps...

Think I found the problem. A cracked wear ring. A wear ring and impellor were already ordered last week and shld be here any day now. Yahoo!

Funny how conditioned we become....actually happy to find a cracked ring if it leads to problem resolution :D

I ordered the wrong impeller tool. While I did order the wrong one I still think it should have been caught since SBT calls you back personally to confirm the order and core. I am not happy about it since it impedes the possibility of me going to the lake this weekend :)
