VTS motor turns in one direction only

Hey I've been searching the threads but haven't found the one that meets my specific needs. Plus I'm impatient! But can someone help me with why my vts will go up but not down? And if its in the module behind the motor, then how do you get in it. I started picking at the black goo but wasn't sure if I should do that. The motor is new, but will only turn one direction.

First of all test your switches. Look at the manual and on the diagram look for the switches and make sure you have continuity when pressing the button.

If that's good, chances are that its either one of the relay's or one of the limit magnetic reed switches.

That reed switch would only let you move in one direction and never go back, the relay though would just be stuck in one direction and not want to click at all. I've seen the relay melt the circuit board if the motor seizes and the fuse doesn't blow.

Getting the black goo off is difficult and time consuming and there is always a potential to break the board while doing it.

Its easier to do by using a heat gun and slowly heating and chipping the stuff away instead of taking big chunks out.

The board is held in with 4 or 2 screws under the goo.

There are tutorials online I've seen that show whats inside and how to chip it away.

I'll see if i can find one.

Both

2 relay's

and a bunch of tube type magnetic reed switches

The tube all the way on the Right is probably stuck closed so that the trim can move up but not go back down. Its a safety feature that stops you from over-driving it.

Thanks for that link! If I had looked at it first I would not have asked the last question. Thanks again. Big help

Your welcome,

There is one other thing you'll see while google searching. Its called a trim fix. The guy just built an external module that does all the same things and all you have to do is stick it on top of the box.

I've never tried it but i've seen the add's.

Cool I'll look it up. Mine doesn't have to water proof cause I've put motor in a aluminum boat. So it shouldn't get wet unless I sink the boat.

I'd think it would be more prone to getting wet in that case.

Got any pic's ?

Not yet. Been thinking of posting some. But I cut out bottom of hull and mounted it in the bottom back part of a 1648 aluminum boat. Not completely finished , but I'm building my back fishing deck over the motor. It'll be like an inboard. Rivers around here get real shallow during the summer.
