Having grief making vts on '96 gsx work. Just clicks with up button, does nothing on down button. Need to know how to check if switch, or motor, or vts module.

I have heard that the most common failure point of the VTS is the switch. The sun dries it out and then water gets in it. You could take it off and jump the wires and see if it does anything.

vts problems

Thanks for the help with switches. But determined not a switch problem. appears motor has stuck itself in full down position and will not come up. Up/down switches do work when I disconnect everything, and use multi-meter. Hook up motor to other 12 volt and can make it go foward/backwards. All that appears fine. I think problem is in magic black box behind vts? Will spend more hours trying to nail it down.

same problem with mine. went to the lake, vts worked, played around, vts quit working. 2 hours narrowing down the problem, determined it was the relays behind the (MAGIC) VTS black box`but before i could get it off it started working again. assuming there is water getting in somehow.....
a good way to tell is to use a circuit safe test light that will tell you hot or ground. my xp is a few years newer but hot is constant and ground is intrduced via relay. one of my relays was stuck or shorted by water

Thanks for reply. Did manage to get to point where I could here both up and down relays clicking, but I suppose that may not necessarily mean they are transfering the 12 volts to right place.(or the ground) I hav'nt pulled out anything further than the motor, so can't see what's really there. Are the relays external from the vts module, or are they inside it?
