Vent line issue?

I have a 2000 gtx and the machine only get out of idle if you unscrew the gas cap. Is this because the vent lines are hooked up wrong or they aren't working. I dont want to keep the gas cap loose while im riding.

Yes, follow them from the tank sending until. There will be a tee. The one going up to the handlebar area has a check valve that should let air into the tank but not out.
