hey guys, ill try and keep it short.

2 stroke 1994 spi 587 engine. ran fine all of last year and now running into an issue recently. I can fire the thing up on the trailer no problem. once I put it in the water I'm having some troubles. I can usually get it started and at idle but once I give it some throttle it bogs out pretty quick.

brand new spark plus and battery. I've got roughly 140 psi of compression. I've got the rpm up to about 3000 out of water. high speed screw at 0 and low speed at 1-1/4 turn out. needle and seat and pop off pressure seem fine. also cleaned out the fuel selector.

one thing I noticed today before I dropped it in the water again. I fired it up on the trailer and held the throttle open and it reved up high and then dropped down quite a bit while holding it the whole time.

any ideas would be great, thanks

Bypass your upstream fuel system, run the in line from the pickup directly into the carb.

I'm still a bit new to these so correct me iff I'm wrong. the pickup on the fuel tank has 4 lines. "on" which runs to the fuel selector on position. a vent line, reserve line and a return line.

run the "on" line directly to the carb? sorry still wrapping my head around the system.

Check the voltage output . Make sure it is not overcharging. Voltage should not be exceeding 15 volts.

Yes, so,,,remove the "on" line that goes to the selector from the fuel pickup,,,put it aside, remove the out line at the fuel/water separator, and put it into the "on" side at the fuel selector that you just removed,,,therefore, you have the line to the carb coming straight out of the pickup, enabling you to bypass a possible clogging fuel selector.

gotcha. Makes sense. I’ve had the fuel selector off and was able to blow air through with my mouth. But I’ll give it a try next time I’m on the water. Thanks.

I am confused, if the selector was off, then you should not be able to blow through?

When I has the selector taken apart I was able to blow through when in the on and reserve position. But not in the off position. Meaning I don’t think there was anything wrong with it.
