Trailer Light Question

Hooking up the trailer lights on my 2000 Chevy 2500. I sort of rigged up the wiring, and now the brake lights are lite when the tail lights are on. And I know why, I have both the brake wire and running lights going to the brown. This was the only way I could think to hook it up. It had a 7 pin, but the PO had the wires all jacked up so I just linked into the wires for the tail lights. So basically I need to make it so when the running lights are on it doesn't go back into the brake lights.

It is brighter when you hit the brakes, but not much. Everything on the trailer seems to work fine. Is there a way to make it so it doesn't back feed. Below is a crude picture of how its hooked up, ignore the flat lines, that was just to get my spacing. Thanks for anyhelp you can give.

The trailer lights probably have the brake and tail light in one. So if wire correctly when lights are on it will light up and then touch the brake it goes brighter.

yeah the trailer lights work great, but now the lights on the truck have the brake lights on all the time when the running lights are on

Hey ding,

Did you already look under the the drivers side rear fender well? That's where I found a bundle of wires for the trailer package option on my 99 Silverado 1500. It did not have the trailer hitch installed when I bought it but all the wires were stuffed under the fender. It was wrapped in black tape with a white tag on it. I do not remember the wire colors but a simple google search will help ya there.

Hope this helps,

Robert

Ding,

I had some time between projects this morning. So I looked under my current tow vehicle, a 2005 Avalanche Z71. The colors you are looking for are:

Yellow for the left turn signal
Dark green for the right turn signal
Brown for the parking lights
Red for the brakes
Black for the ground

Hope this helps,

Robert

Thanks for this, I did find out the issue.
So on a 4 pin, brown is running, the left and right are the yellow and green, the yellow and green are also the brake lights. Issue is on this chevy, and yours, that the brake wire is different from the turn signal. Which is a issue for the 4 pin because it causes back-feed if you run both the brake wire and the turn signal to the same cables. So what you need a is diode to make it so it can't back-feed. Or you can get a 5 wire to 4 wire harness that has a red wire for the brake lights. Found it at a O'reily's Auto parts.
