I recently bought 2 98 xp limited's. Seems like every time I go out there is a new glitch with one or both of them. It's getting better as they dont sink any more (thanks for the help finding the missing siphon tube guys!). My latest problem developed yesterday when I was out on what ended up to be a short ride. When running wide open, the motor revs to about 6800 rpm, seems normal compared to the other one, but it will only go about 40-45 mph. When wide open it almost sounds like it's sucking in air somehow, kinda sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Also not sure if the two problems are related but the trim gauge doesn't work (hasnt since I got it) and it seems that it is constantly moving itself down, to the point where it's scary to drive, I can move it back up but it just goes right back down. The machine does still take on some water but not like it used to if that's any sort of a hint as to what's going on. Please help, these are such fun toys and can't stand to stay off them. Thanks, this is all new to me.

If you are taking on water and experiencing VTS trouble at the same time, I would suspect a boot failure where the VTS linkage comes through the transom. Check and make sure it is not torn. There has to be a good seal here. Over tightening will tear the boot, under tightening will let water leak. If you find a leak here you will need to open up the black box where the VTS system is and let the water out and dry it out good. Hopefully it is not to late to save at least some components of your VTS.

I checked that boot that you were talking about and the clip that holds it closest to the hull had popped off, it didn't appear to be ripped at all. I opened the black box and there was no water in it which surprised me. Any other ideas? Hopefully that will help, now for the other problems. Thanks for the help, I would have a huge bill at the dealer if it wasn't for you guys. Keep the ideas coming!
