So after my steering cable snapped and a bajaed it into the weeds today.... I now need to replace it. I have a parts hull with a cable in it.... Problem is I have no idea how to remove the dang thing. I know how to get it out of the steering stem that's no problem. I got the nut loose on the inside of the hull, but does that plastic nut on the outside loosen now? I tried shoving the cable through the back but that didn't work at all? Anyone help me out here? I need to get this done Im going camping on lake Erie next week and need all my skis in top shape.

Undo the end hardware... and undo the mount hardware... and it should break free. On the transom side... it could be glued into place, with RTV, or other sealant.

But... before I guess... what ski are you working on?

sorry... Its my 96 xp. Inside the hull is is undone. I should just be able to shove it out the back correct? any trick to breaking the sealant loose?

I just took one off a RX so it might be different but you need to loosen the nut on the back by the jet take that piece that bolts to the nozzle off and un screw the transom plastic nut then you can slide that off along with the boot and 2 plastic pieces then it should slide out pulling from the inside

When I try and twist the plastic nut to take the good cable off the parts hull it just twists a little bit and twists right back I can't get it to loosen. Do I need to hold the cable from inside the hull with a pair of vice grips or something? And I don't know how I will get the plastic nut off on my running ski because it still has the pump on and I can't get and tools up in there.

I Didn't have to hold the cable, sounds like it has some sealant on it maybe some brake or carb cleaner or acetone will help brake it loose while you twist it ????

Ill try that but that still doesn't tell me how to loosen the nut that is on the running ski... its so tight up in there next to the pump.

Alright but I still don't even know how to get the plastic nut off anyways. Im having no luck? Is there a trick to this

I just did this to mine when i did the pump conversion. Broke that plastic nut in half. Had to make one out of aluminum. Where the cable goes through the back of the ski, on the inside, there is a nut. Loosen that all the way. Then push the cable out of the ski. It will only go a few inches. Then that plastic nut is actually 2 halves held together by a stainless ring. Slide the ring toward the ski and remove the plastic nuts. Then pull the cable back into the ski and out. Hope my description is understandable.

Ya. You shouldnt have to remove the pump at all. Unless you wanted more room to work. But its not necessary.

Okay im assuming the thing is sealed pretty tight into the hull because Ive got the big nut on the back side off and I cant get it to budge. Any good way to just ramathorne that thing out the back?

Not really. Mine came out pretty easy once the nut was off the inside. The one i put in was a little difficult to install but it was easy to clean the hole out. I guess you can spray carb cleaner or some sort of solivent onto the instide where its threaded and see if it will help loosen it up. Its most likely just silicone or something of the sort.

I just went through the same process. I loosened the nut on the inside of the hull but left it on a few threads. Clamped a pair of vice grips on the cable up against the nut and smacked it a few times with a hammer until it moved out the back enough to slide the metal sleeve off the back of the black plastic split nut. Try spraying some PB Blaster from the inside where the cable goes through the hull, it will help loosen up any corrosion that has built up.
Take your time it will come out.
