Starter just spins

Tried to start my GTX and the starter just spins

What year GTX?

Is your battery fully charged?

Is it the original starter or an aftermarket starter.

Has the starter ever been removed and reinstalled, if so was a new seal used?

Has the mag flywheel cover ever been removed, if so was it sealed up properly?

2002 GTX DI. Battery is fully charged. I am not certain if the starter is the original or not. I have owned it for 5 years and I have no idea about the rest of the questions. Is there a way to tell if it’s an after market, if the starter has been removed or if the mag fly wheel cover has been removed?

I'd guess the starter drive is not engaging the flywheel or if you're "lucky" maybe the starter shaft has snapped such that somehow you won't need to remove the magneto cover.

Anyway, I;d begin by removing and inspecting the starter drive end.

The drawing containing crankcase with reed shows the starter drive, I think this link takes you there.

I replaced the starter and now it just clicks. Is there a way to manually turn the engine over?

Pull the spark plugs and remove the plastic cover at the rear of the engine then turn by hand.

If it is an aftermarket starter they can be junk form the get go.
