My starter has kinda been finicky, but my mechanic had given me assurances that it was fine and that the charging voltage from the rectifier was good... I always keep a rectifier handy as we know them to be a consumable.
Out of the water it will keep going until the motor turns over.. .good sign. In the water - I'd say 90% of the time when I have it off, it fires back, but that 10% of the time this happens:
1. It will click, but stop... have to wait a couple (5 seconds) to do it again and it will then fire, as the engine was 'warm'
2. Just won't click, turn over or nothing... usually I'll just turn everything off just to make sure, make sure to re-align the pump back to N... and after trying multiple times over 2-3 minutes eventually it'll fire
This could be a battery issue I reckon... but if the rectifier is good (under 15v, but over 12) it should be charging? Maybe I should put it on a tender more often (I haven't actually charged the battery at all in over a year)
I have put in a new stator when I had the motor rebuilt as well
