starter bendix clip installation

What's the trick to the bendix circlips? They come off easy enough but the manual isn't real clear on how they want you to do it, so what's every do to compress the clip enough to go inside the collar? I have managed to get old clips back in but with new ones the tricks I have don't work.

THere is nothing easy about it. They usually get deformed when removing so you are better off replacing the clips with new ones. Even then they are a pain.

Thanks miki, I've got a few spare collars off junk starters, I was thinking I would try sticking one on top over the ring to hopefully compress the ring enough to fit into the cavity.
