speedo on 1996 GTI ?

Hello,
My speed was jumping all over the place on the speedometer last year and I checked the paddle wheel in the back and it looks like new. Someone suggested the wiring could be loose. My question is how do I get at it? does the scoop like piece on the hood come off to get at the wiring? let me know please. thanks Randy

more than likely it is your speed sensor itself. I have seen them wigout and send weird signals to the gauge where they jump around especially right after it is started. the wiring is pretty robust and I wouldn't look there first.

I would take it out and mount a tach in its place, the speedo isn't very accurate and RPMs are more important for monitoring engine condition than speed.

Thanks for the replies. I only ride this 4-5 times a year so I think I'm not going to mess with anything, just ride it.
