OK...........so it finally happened for the first time to me..I was out on the bay and we had a storm coming in so the marine radio was calling for 4-6ft waves .....PERFECT..... I was out there bombing around on those high rollers and i wasnt watching how far from the light house i was getting...well....i forgot that my fuel guage dosent work so i dont ever look at it and i was having so much fun on the waves that i fogot to pull the seat off and check the gas..... I was about 2 1/2 miles off shore and she dies...... i about sh** myself when i realized what happened.... i had no radio ...no flares......no gps..... NOTHING ....and i was FREEZING ....so i drifted on the water from 6pm -1am while being knocked off the ski constantly by the waves and the dang XP is the worst by the way to get on im finding....... So i finally see a light and i start yelling for help...its PITCH FREAKIN BLACK and i knew they couldnt hear me....so i dug through my holding box and found a lighter that the previous owner had left in there ...this thing is all wet and prolly a million years old.... so i try for abot 10 minutes to get it to light and it finally does and i start waving it back and forth and yelling till they seen it......IT WAS THE COAST GUARD ..helleluagh ....they came over and got me and towed my ski back in for me ...LAUGHING THE WHOLE TIME by the way ....just thought that you guys should know so you could get a good laugh too .....

wow man, glad you're ok, it's funny they were laughin bout it, it coulda been a lot worse

Brock,

That's some story, I can't believe you were out there in 4-6' waves on an XP, not exactly the most sea worthy craft. You were lucky the CG showed up. Next time at least take a buddy, it could have ended a lot worse.

Here's a salute to our friends in the Coast Guard, Semper Paratus.

FIX YOUR DAMN FUEL GAUGE! PACK A CELL PHONE IN A DRY BOX WITH FOAM!

Four and six foot waves sound awesome!

Glad your ok. LOL

Next time carry a marine radio with you. This could've easily been a recovery rather than a rescue. SAFETY FIRST!!!

Brock this scares me and I don't think anyone nailed the largest point yet. RES! I'm the worst about it. I've been going from the reserve nipple of the baffle(through oem filter cup)to the fuel pump. Now I feel like going out and buying a bunch of fuel selector valves to restore that insurance. You must have not been running in the on position? Or did you bypass the petcock like so many of us have?

i bypassed it and was having so much fun that i forgot to check the fuel level...and no i was not on lake michigan i was on lake HURON.... SO hence the big waves...its on the east side of the state and when any storms blow into michigan the wind alwasy comes from the east so we all know to head out on the water when we know a storms comin in....it can turn bad really fast just like it did for the ships that sank out by the charity islands ..same thing happened to them ...the storm picked up and it turned bad in a instant without warning....

Yea lake huron gets pretty rowdy I've seen it first hand in Oscoda.

The fuel selector did strike me, Im like how could he run out? The ski should start to chug and thats when you flip the switch and head in but you have it completely bypassed. I have 3 reserve gallons (3 separate 1 gallon cans) bungied down in the front of the hull for just in case situations like this.

If you want to keep your setup the same as it is now you should probably start carrying extra fuel with you. That way even in a situation where you forget to check it and run out you can just dump a couple gallons in the tank and head to shore.

Glad your ok bro! And after an experience like that I'm sure you don't need people telling you you need a backup plan, Im sure you'll have one from here on out.

I bet with 7 hours of floating you have a darn good plan for the next time you go out. running out of gas is the thing i worry about the most. all other break downs you cant control but fuel is the one thing your in control of. i once stalled out in the middle of a channel and couldnt get her fired back up. never been so scared on the water in my life. big boats going by and you cant get out of the way. thankful it was in the back bays and they were just big cruisers and no freighters. GLAD you made it out ok and only long term effect will be a good story to tell. it must have felt like forever out there in the dark. did you start to panic at all? i always wear a full wetsuit when i ski just in case to prevent hypothermia. may only wear the legs on and the top folded over but its there if i need it. esp. if you keep getting knocked off like that in the cold. and the other point is that there was a storm coming too. none the less at least your ok and safe at home now. guess the jetski gods where looking down on you!

way to be an idiot and not bring flares with you, or a safety whistle or some type of signal light. it's ridiculous people take these things out without any safety gear. if you're going to ride, invest a few bucks on things that could save your life.

(dsteinmann)........about 10 miles i would guess ..............

(rlamb)................FU*! you ..... dont call me an idiot flares dont do much good when you are the only one on the water now does it??

thanks

of course i do you light 2 or three of them at a time and strap them to the back of the ski and use them to propell yourself home like a rocketship!!!!!! I would have done that but im such an idiot that i forgot to bring the gorilla glue on this trip too....

Hmmm......, this discussion gives me pause. Now I know what to do with that JATO pack I have stored in the garage. I got it at a surplus auction, it would be one hell of a ride, of course I could end up in the middle of Kansas.

Lou

careful lou dont light dem der flares all at once you may end up on da moon ....dont ya know what the concept of flares is

I kinda thought this discussion was getting a little heated, just trying to add a little levity. I believe it's to light your cigar?

Actually I think flares are a little over the top, I do keep a waterproof flashlight, with my luck the batteries would be dead, I also have a roll of camo duck tape, but damned if I can find it.

Way to bring a chuckle back to an uncomfortable situation Lou!

I have been thinking and need to say that bringing extra gas cans could be a bad idea, especially for a wave jumper. The right can may be ok wedged into the perfect spot, but I'm seeing a little yellow pop up vent thing coming loose and pissin raw gas all under your seat just waiting on a spark.

yeah i agree with you especially when i light the rockets to get back to shore........... i just get very irritated when guys insult over the internet ...its very low and childish in my opinion and i dont do it to anyone unless you insult me so why do they do it to me

Yea you have to make sure their sealed and secure. I was jumping wakes last sunday all day with em in there, No problems so far.

LOL. Come on Brock, you don't need to light the rockets if you have spare gas! Therefor your safe!

Don't take his comment so personal, Its the interwebz and he's just trolling.

The way I always look at it is what if the forum was real life and we were all in a room together talking. Would a complete stranger walk up to you over hearing your story and call you an idiot to your face? I highly doubt he would and thats why he's a troll.

I can tell he's young, cause young people haven't developed the character to think about what their saying before they say it and how it will affect others. We have all been there, and its easy to spout insults from behind your computer screen without any repercussions. Im sure everyones an idiot to him because he's got it all figured out, typical kid stuff.

i know ....LOL just trying to keep things loose down under..ya know .....

You know Brock since your original post I've been thinking about what emergency supplies every boater must have on the water. this would be especially true if have the possibility of drifting far away from land or in the open sea. I would imagine that a small marine band radio and even a cell phone would help. In your case you didn't break down you just ran out of gas so I would think that having some sort of extra on board would be helpful...just a gallon or two. Anyway, glad your story turned out safe and didn't end in a search and rescue effort. I think it's a good lesson for us all...just glad you had it and not me.

Kyle
