Should the drive shaft just pull out of the pump?

I removed the engine from my 96 sportster, and it seems like the drive shaft wanted to come out of the pump end very easily. Should I be worried about this or should I just push it back in when I'm putting the engine back in. Thank you for the help. Devon.

There is nothing that holds the shaft into the pump. It should pull free of the pump without force.
