Seadoo HX boarding tips

How do you board your HX? My first outing with mine was a failure. I was in waist deep water trying to get on. As the day went on I got better. I could balance my self with my knees and belly long enough to press the starter and throttle it, but it never started so I fell off. As soon as it was level, it would start normally. Is there something wrong? It wouldn't start unless the impeller was close to the surface. Well anyways, I should try at a local inland lake instead of Lake Erie. Also, there was a whole lot of water in my hull, so that might have been a problem. I gave up once my battery said "no". Thank you, and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum haha
 
Side boarding with throttle is the best way. You do have to have some upper body strength but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. You should be able to balance it to keep the pump in the water, gun it, and hop right on.
 
THe HX will take on a little water normally but if you are getting a lot in something is wrong. Check your hood seal and the boot around the seat shock first.
Another key is that it will start easily. If you have issues with it slow to start or have to crank it a long time something is wrong and you need to correct that first. On an HX especially you need it to start easily and immediately.

The only way I can get on mine from the rear is jumping on it from a dock or a trailer, definitely not deep water. In deep water I start from the left side of the ski and also have a wrist lanyard not the lifejacket clip. Put on the lanyard then grab both grips. Pull the ski over towards you a little but keep the pump in the water and turn the handlebars to full lock right then start the ski. Once it is started keep the bars turned full right and give it more gas, as it starts to speed up it will get more stable and you can either get a knee up and then get onto it or once you get better give it even more gas and the ski and seat will slip under and you can get your entire leg over it. It is one of those things that just gets easier with practice.

Side boarding is the only way. I do it like Mik except for the turning right part. I just pull it over, fire it up, gas it and turn left until I drag myself on. Seat on my chest and right to my azz. Don't tell me you can't do it. I'm 6'2' and weight a duece and a half. I'm a big guy and in my mid 40's. If your above all those numbers I'll cut you some slack, LOL. It just takes some getting used to. The HX is a love it or hate it ski.

From the shore, I'll go out knee deep and tip the ski to the left a little, like you're on a bicycle waiting at a red light. Start it, and pull my leg up quick and creep out faster than you should from the shore.


Here's my lanyard wrist strap. I have these on every one of my Seadoo's, even the boat. I can't stand them on the PFD.

Right there with you Racer, 6'3", 200 lbs and 41 years young and I even had my 8 year old son on it with me on Saturday. With all my ski, I am finding I enjoy the HX the most at the moment but damn my long legs get cramped after a couple hours but it burns through the fuel so fast I get some breaks in.
 
I can climb up on mine from behind and love the challenge, but the side start works well in rougher water. I am 6'2, 180 lbs. For the side start I also start on the left with ski tilted, but keep the pump in the water and make sure nothing in front of you. I open throttle wide open and in less than 2 seconds the seat is right under my belly and I just pull/bend my legs forward and Presto, I am sitting on ski. Scary first time or two but a gas after you realize it really works. If you don't floor it all the way you are only making it harder as the pull lasts longer. It should jerk you up and be flying in a few seconds or less. What a Rush!
 
Update: I actually was able to drive the HX today. Although I did not quite master the side boarding, I was at least able to get my belly on the seat, but my legs weren't cooperating. I straddled it in knee deep water (both feet over the gunnels), and floor it. It really is an awesome ski and is quite the work out. Thank you all.
