Just brought a 2006 Sportster.. but the rear engine cover not popping up.. so new gas struts ordered.. (Hmm tested the existing ones... Repco.. Jan 2022 - What! 165N ..) ok 300N is what is recommended.. (we have 23 kg each side currently = 230N) I waiting on the the nice stainless ones from Queensland.. Prevision Gas Springs (Opps - not endorsing.. yet) .. 710MM EXTENDED 315MM STROKE 8x18 STAINLESS STEEL GAS STRUT 316SS8 C710/315 B0SS B0SS.
I'll install and advise..

Well the gas struts are E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T ! Pull the release level and up the batch hatch goes - nice and steady! Once up not blowing down! And not going up at a rate that would tear the hinges off!

I solved the same problem on my 2004 Sportster by installing another spring inside each gas strut spring. In other words it's a spring within a spring. Problem solved with hardly any cost.
