Just want to know if worth taking ski out again as went out this morn n sucked up a heap o shit getting out from boat ramp and lost all thrust. Have taken home flushed out engine and impeller, heaps of sand and weeds come out. Impeller is chipped on edge n wear ring is scrached but not too bad, still tight clearance. Or should I take to service department n get checked???

Heh....still tight clearance? You checked it with a feeler gauge? These things' performance are incredibly sensitive to prop/ring gap spacing. Mine reads .004-.006 most would accept .014-.025 as acceptable.

Have you pulled the pump yet?...found if the prop spins freely? Not hard to do. If it does spin freely and you don't have a set of gauges...re-assemble and hit the lake. You're gonna be looking for cavitation on take off and a lower top speed. If those don't present consider yourself lucky. If they do...well....invest in a prop removal tool...basically a drive shaft end with a hex end on it that you place in a vice...a 12mm allen socket that you will use to loosen the pump from the prop. Do the ring removal and reinstall using the freezer method.

Not difficult...and you will learn your boat a bit better.

One last thing...not entirely directed to you KiwiKarl....I've said this at least a thousand times...maybe a few less than that on this site...don't run your ski in shallow water...even at a ramp. You'd be surprised how much draw the pump has...it'll pick stones off a ramp's surface if the water is shallow enough.

Hey red2blue,

Thanks for your reply and info.

Here goes....... Well after I had cleaned out, then cleaned out another 2 times (I repeated this process as outlined below over an hour) I thought i'd go back to the boat ramp and give it a go (tides around here are massive with low of .5m to a high of between 8m and 10m), by the time I got there it had risen up by 2m and that's in an hour and a half. Anyways back to the story, I started up seems ok, jumped on and headed out past rock entrance then opened up throttle. At this point I wasn't sure what gonna happen......... All I can say is I'm one hell of a lucky bugger, no cavitation top or bottom end, i didn't achieve top speed as swells were 1.5m and not a chance of any smooth water managed to hit 90km in the ruff wasn't game enough to hit full throttle. I stayed out for the next four hours and am so stoked.

Re launching at boat ramp, I have read many of your posts on this site about this, but today I just got unlucky and have been very carefull and listened to your advice. At boat ramp water depth was just ova waist height, when I sucked all this crap up I was 100m from ramp at entrance of sea walls to boat ramp, it was ankle deep!!

Just checked clearance of ring and got .008
I didn't remove pump but ran hose either side of pump then started up attached hose and flushed, removed hose stopped engine then repeated all this several times, occasionally gave engine a few revs.

P.S. I am an expat kiwi living in Aussie but you can just call me Karl

10-4 Karl. Glad to hear your luck turned around.

Re when you hit the low water....I haven't much experience with moving water like you got...only suggestion I got...get yourself a topo map and study the hell out of it. Most fisherman here have them...not just for fish holding ares...but also possible underwater obstructions...and when water is moving as much and as fast as yours does...might not be such a bad idea for you as well.
