Hey all, been awhile since my last problem, well I have another one I need help with. At the end of last season I picked up a piece of wood that messed up the wear ring, so I just now took it all apart and replaced the wear ring with all OEM parts, the impeller felt tight and was hard to spin even before putting back on the boat, I just figured it was supposed to be since it was new, now that it is all back together, the engine won't even turn over, I can barewly move the PTO, and if I take the spark plugs out it will barely turn over but really slowly. Any ideas on what is going on???

Take pump off again.
Its binding somewhere.

Engine should spin freely with no plugs in there unless its sized.

Ok i had planned on taking it back off, question is where is it binding up at then? Is it possible the pump had been changed sometime and the wear ring isnt the right one for this housing? How hard should it be to tap the new ring into the housing? I used a 4x4 block of wood and t tapped in fairly easy.

I am 99.9% positive it is in the groove where it should be, i guess i will take it all back apart and look again though

Check the fill plug on jet pump... If you screwed that all the way down its hitting the pump shaft inside.... It's supposed to be flush with outside on th cone.

two things are typical:

1) you've pinch the washer. When tightening the impeller... rock the pump boddy, and you will feel it if it gets tight.

2) If you have an aluminum pump body... the corrosion has made the pump bore undersized, and it's pushing the ring in.

If you used OEM parts, the impeller shouldn't be touching the ring. But, if it is... and you have verified that it's not the washer... spry the inside of the pump with WD-40, and the engine will probably start. Once it does... it will clearance itself.

Also... you will know right away if it's the washer. Once you loosen the impeller... it should spin.

UPDATE on this, I haven't been on here in awhile, the problem I was having with the ski that was driving me crazy has been solved. It wasnt the thrust washer in the pump, it was actually a combination of 3 things, 1, even though I bought an OEM ring from the dealer, brought the whole pump down to the dealer, mechanic took it apart, verified the washer was in right, bearings were good, impeller shaft was straight, he cleaned the threads since they had some corrosion, put the impeller back on, was STILL rubbing, he said there was something on the pump housing under the ring, but I know I cleaned it real good, so I think I got an slightly defective ring, anyways, 2nd problem, the ski has a weak starter, apparently not helping the problem with the ring being so tight, and lastly, and most embarrasing, come to find out after messing with it for hours trying to get it to start, apprarently my "finger trigger happy" sprayinbg of fogging oil last winter was the main problem, I obviously over did it by ALOT, the thing was full of so much fogging oil that when was trying to start it, it was acting like a cylinder that was full of gas, long story short finally got most of the fogging oil out of the engine, and got it to turn over enough with the pump loosened up a bit and spraying the wear ring with WD-40, finally got it to start and run and tightened the pump up, lets just say I didnt have a mosquito problem for a hour or so because of so much smoke LOL.
