You have discovered the reason this forum exists. Very very few shops will work on our boats. True orphans.

Replacing seal and bushings in the stator is not too difficult after you have the stator in your hand. There are threads here on how to do it. While you are there, check the clearance between impeller and wear ring.

that is not good news. I am afraid of starting this project and not being able to complete it due to lack of necessary tools (including the possibility of busting a bolt and needing to drill it out).

Do you think a Mercury dealer would be in a position to do this repair? I have used one in this area before even though I was not satisfied with the services "they claimed" to have performed.

Any Merc dealer SHOULD be able to do it. But since the split about 2005, they won't.

Best bet is an independent service center.

The broken bolt would be the hardest part-- if it were to happen. Start NOW by spraying the bolts with your favorite penetrating oil. There is a lot more to a broken bolt than "drilling it out".

Quality of service is always a question. Did they REALLY replace that $200 part? Did they REALLY adjust that widget? Etc. Always get old parts back.

While you are down and back there; the rubber bellows on the steering and shift gate should be replaced. Standard maintenance items.

out of curiosity, would this item contribute to my steering being stiff in the last year?

If the steering boot is damaged, your steering cable is likely rusted inside. At the nozzle- test by moving the nozzle. Any noise like crunching or grinding is a sign you need a new cable. Don't panic. It's not that hard to replace. There are threads here about it.

Replace it now, before it fails at 50mph.
