Hi, Just put a new SBT 787 motor in, rebuilt carburetors with OEM kits (made sure arm is flat with the seat), new battery. I am having issues starting the motor without opening the throttle and then still it takes several attempts. I hear it clunk, crank, it wants to start, starts turning, starts smoking and then unless I give it throttle it dies with a starter winding noise. I'm not mechanically experienced enough to describe it better, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

Low speed screws are both at 3/4 turns, idle at 2200 on hose, 1400-1500 in water.

Help :) thx

Sounds like ya need to pull the starter and examine it and the bendix. Both have
known water intrusion ploblems.

It was just out when I put the motor in, no real problems with it before the new motor. A little rusty but otherwise solid.

Even new batteries have been known to be bad prematurly. A load test of each will be neccessary. Remove the *plugs and drive cover and tell us if the engine rotates
by hand turning the PTO wheel.

Investigate by removal, the Rotary valve clearance, starter/bendix, Stator.

All three are major mechanical players. Each can have multiple associated problems.

Rotary valve = bent gear shaft, seal ring

Starter = worn armature bearings, brushes, seals

Stator = Bendix bearings broken bits, metal shaveings, pick-up

Any OR ALL are culprit

def. check the rotary valve its like timing on a car if its off, it will cause this problem.....but before i go further, is this clunk click noise coming from the motor or starter. I mine is the starter actually cranking the motor??
