Just acquired a 1996 XP with the 787 engine. It sat for 2 years and motor is seized. Asking for pros or cons to rebuilding. This is my first ski. Thank you

Pros: Rebuilding you'll have a ski you'll learn a lot about, which can make it easier to maintain it later. Plus, you'll have a ski to enjoy and you could probably sell easily when you're ready. A running 1996 XP is pretty sought after.

Cons: Time and money rebuilding, if not rebuilding you'll be stuck parting it out, shipping parts, and getting rid of the hull and what you don't sell. Another con, you'll be missing out on a really fun ski..

All depends on what is really wrong with the motor. I've got a 1995 XP with a 720 and it was a cheaper option for me to just get a new motor. I've spent around 4500 Canadian on getting mine running and looking nice... and she still isn't quite there yet

What would be a ball park estimate to rebuild?

Price it out, if you need a whole motor, you could do a core exchange. You probably should go through the fuel system, replace fuel and oil lines, rebuild the carbs with OEM kits, etc. If you do just the engine swap for say $1000 or so, you don't want to trash the engine with carbs being neglected. You'll also want to drain and fill the jet pump, ck the wear ring, ck the bailers, ck the carbon ring. Don't want to sink on the first trip either.

Budget what you think you need to spend, you can spend a couple thousand before you know it, when you remove an engine, you need an alignment tool, you may need a few other tools also, like a flywheel puller or an impeller tool.

Check out my "real cost of that $200 barn find" in my signature block, that'll give you an idea how fast it can add. up.
