Pump question, 96 GTX

I have a 96 GTX that I bought 2 years ago, but otherwise new to PWC's. It had been in storage a while when we bought it, but I rebuilt the carbs, put a new battery in it, replaced the fuel in the tank, and it fired right up. We had a ton of fun with it last summer. Here's the question- When I start it up on the hose, after a few seconds, I hear a loud grumbling/resonating sound from the pump area. Blipping the throttle may clear it for a few more seconds. I don't recall hearing it when it's in the water. Is this a normal thing, or a sign that it's time to rebuild the pump? If the pump needs a rebuild, are there any special tools or skills needed?

It is very normal for the pumps on these to make noise when out of the water.

That being said, you should change your pump oil every season as part of the general maintenance. If the oil is milky you will need to replace the bearings and seals.

The rattle is the Jet Ski language for.... "Put me in the water and lets go have some fun"
