I am getting ready to Summerize my boat, and was curious to the amount of grease you pump into the zirc fitting for the PTO hub??

If I go out 30 times in the summer, that will be 60-90 pumps....will the excess grease sit in the boot?

ok, every other trip..., if anything, it'll end up under the grey shield. Rather have grease there than a stripped pto/driveshaft?

i pumped 3 pumps in and the shaft moved back about 1/4 inch. is this excessive?
concerns?
can't load photo right now.

found this by search and re-incarnated it

thanks
bobby

you got it...

That's all it takes if there was already grease present. If it moves, that is a good sign, means you have packed the grease. If you had to pump and pump, without movement, that 's when there would be a flag raised. But you're good to go!:)

Stop !!

DO not overfill, it will blow out the rear seal and water will come into the boat. The boot should feel firm but not blown up like a balloon. I lubed mine for many years once per season (95 Speedster) had no problems.

Holy Cow

The casual attitudes here toward an very important item. IF yout PTO is not lubed correctly, it will blow its seal or wear out fast.

Do not use just any lube, use a good grade marine lubricant. Frankly I would get the Sea Doo shop manual for your boat and use the exact lube specified in the shop manual description for the operation. it will be a Bombardier product and expensive, but this is a critical component of your boat.

A PTO seizure/replacement is a huge operation.

.

would you also be surprised, as to how many people, do not know, that theres a zerk fitting under the grey shield. Just serviced/tune-up 3 skis yesterday, original owners, and they neva knew that was there...these were 96/97 skis too.

Think about it, the seal, is no where near, exposed to the "zerk", to where grease will be. The pto is threaded on to the crank, which will block anything toward the seal, so yuor grease will only be present at/on the 2-3inches of driveshaft, inserting into the pto, which then, the grease is compressed around it and the splines, inside of the pto.

don't grease it regular and it WILL look like this or WORSE! There isn't a seal on PTO end to fail , so a little extra grease in the boat can easily be wragged up. Trust me , a busted boat in the heat of summer SUCKS !

The grease of the pto is not in the water unless you have other leak, newer than 96 has the greaseless carbon seal, the shaft will move a bit rearward and then when under power it goes back with the thrust of the pump - without grease this sliding gets ugly, do it every month unless on shore for 5, do it before you go out next.

So you basically have to take it apart to grease it? I had mine apart last year to replace the pump housing from plastic to aluminum and mine looked fine. So I have to take it apart to grease it?
