Primer kit install and thoughts

Finally installed a primer kit and wow that is the first mod on every ski from now on :) No more cranking forever after it sits! I had the fuel system drained, carb empty, new fuel filter, and still only took a couple squirts to fire right up. This should increase starter and battery life drastically. Also, without the choke plate it should reduce the airflow into the carb slightly.

Here is what I did:

- Installed the included T-fitting in reserve line between baffle and fuel switch, used regular hose clamps for the 2 x 1/4" connections
- Removed choke cable, kept the inside/outside mouting plates and drilled out to 3/4"
- Installed primer where choke went and connected a piece of the included hose from T-fitting to angled part, and another piece of hose from the straight part and ran towards carb
- Removed carb and took out choke plate screws, plate, cut choke shaft, removed shaft pieces
- Disassembled carb, inspected, cleaned, reassembled
- Installed included plug and line fittings into carb with waterweld epoxy (oil/gas resistant, 1hr cure)
- Installed carb
- Made a loop in the hose down low before going to carb fitting, ziptied everything up including small connections.

Works great, easy install. Took about 10-12 pumps at first to get fuel through the primer lines then just a couple more pumps to squirt the fuel. With the loop I say it should only take a couple pumps from here on out.

P.S. - I had a Fram G-2/G-12 fuel filter installed at beginning of year...well I noticed today it came apart inside ?!? Check out the picture. Probably explains why there was trash in the internal carb filter again when I cleaned it today. I installed a WIX 33002 in its place.

$25.95 on ebay, get the one with brass fittings and make sure it has the primer, nipple, plug, tee, and line.

I had my carbs de chocked and up jetting with air filter fitted and difference in pull off and midrange is massive! Good mod :-)

The kits are available at shopsbt.com also with the brass fittings. I just installed one yesterday with no issues. Works great!

Yup it's one of the first things I do when I get a ski. I pre mix on both my skis so I put the line on the oil injection nipples.

Just sharing my opinion on the primer kits. I have had several on previous skis, and I don't think I will use them again, unless I start trying to build mod engines again.

If you are having a hard time starting the ski than your pop off pressure is generally out of spec. If the pressure required to open the pop off is not being met (either the spring is too stiff , or there isn't enough vacuum from the stock intake) the primer kit will cover up this issue.

They have worked fine for me over the short term (one season) but I find that after sitting over the winter the seals inside the pump mechanism stop working, and it pump is no longer effective. After replacing the pump several times I just decided that I would fix the root cause.
