Possible bad MPEM on 1997 GSX?

Having some troubles with my 1997 GSX. Two problems at the moment that might be related. The second problem is the most annoying right now.

First problem is that the ski will sporadically die for no apparent reason while crusing along. At the time the LCD display goes blank and the ski dies. The only thing that I can do is to remove the DESS key and put it back on. The ski starts normally and may run for a few minutes and then die again or may run for the rest of the day with no problems. During one of these sessions, I opened the front storage compartment and reseated the connector coming out of the DESS post where it connects to the harness. The ski did much better after that.

Second problem might be related and I am now wondering if I am dealing with a MPEM that is getting flaky. At the end of last year, the ski starting running poorly when running at greater than 2/3 throttle. At the time I tought it was related to a fuel problem since it felt like fuel starvation. Checking around I found articles about the grey fuel lines, etc. This spring I replaced the fuel lines and it ran about the same and eventually got worse. I pulled the carbs and rebuilt them and did find a lot of junk in the internal fuel filters. After getting the ski back together, it ran great except for a slight hesitation off-idle which I am attributing to a need to adjust the low-speed screws.

The bigger problem is the ski sometimes will not run at full throttle for more than a few seconds without hitting what feels like another fuel starvation problem. A couple of times the ski would die, and after starting it back up it would die immediately on trying to give it throttle off-idle. I checked all the connections in the ski, and apparently after reseating the connections on the MPEM, the ski ran great... at least for a short period of time. The above symptoms returned on a couple occassions and seemed to be solved each time by reseating the connections going into the MPEM.

Another couple weird things were that at one time during an episode of the poor running condition I noticed a quick OVERTEMP on the LCD display when the engine did not feel hot to the touch. Also the analog speedo has stopped working while the digital speedo still works.

I am wondering if this sounds like a bad MPEM or possibly a loose connection or bad sensor. I hate to throw a lot of money at the ski trying different parts, but it has gotten to the point where I do not want to take the ski out due to the possibility of not making it home.

Thanks to all with suggestions on where to start.
