*plugs and wires?

My 97 GS ran sweet all day today, then, it lost power and sounded funny. Eventually it stalled. Got back to shore and checked the *plugs and noticed a carbon build up on the head of the plugs(where the boot connects to the plug) plugs were fouled as well. Also, the the head of the plugs were loose. The boot jiggles on the plug. I got it home and got it to fire up and idle, hit the throttle and it stalled. So im thinking that the lack of power and stalling is caused by a bad connection/fouled plugs(unless you have any other suggestions). Can I just replace the boots and wires with standard ngk plug boots and wires?

Thanks
Ryan

Sounds like the screw on adapter on the plugs are loose. The spark plug boot screws onto the wire so you could trim the wire back a 1/4 and screw back on. As far as rebuilding the wire with new ones I don't see why not, I rebuilt all kinds of plug wires for different vehicles. Knowing if they need to be rfi sheilded or not is another story.

Yes, and check the compression, thats a tel-tale of engine internal health. If a large
air spew when you open gas cap, the check valve that releases over pressure may need replaced, as it can cause the needle/seat to leak. It vents under rub rail. Bills86e

what would cause the carbon build up on the terminal of the plug? Just a loose connection, or bad boot/wire? And im assuming this would cause running issues, right?

Well, here is the verdict... Rear cylinder 130psi, front cylinder 30psi. This sucks! :( Talked to the dealership and they said between $600 and $700 to do a top end rebuild. Does this seem reasonable? I dont think this would be anything I would want to tackle on my own. Or could a blown gasket be a possibility, because it still idles then dies when you give it throttle.

Also, I talked to another dealership and they said they wouldn't do top ends because the the cranks always go right after a top end. So they told me they would put in a short block for $1700. Theres no way in heck I'm gonna do that to a ski this old.

Any input???

Thanks
Ryan
