I recently cleaned my rave valves on my 99 challenger 1800. Before that, I was having problems with a lot of smoke coming out of my exhaust. In addition to that my port engine runs hight on start and stays when i have it in the water about a couple of months ago. I have to give it a choke to bring the rpm down. Now I ran the engine on the trailer and no problem on the start but it idle on 3500 rpm on both engine. In addition, smoke still comes out + a little bit of oil. What could be my problem? Some people suggested an air leak? pls help!!!

Change your rv seal, your cases are probably filling with oil. If the seal is bad oil will leak and fill the bottom end. If you have a bunch of oil coming out of the exhaust then this could be your issue. Some smoke at start up and while it is warming ip is normal. Excessive smoke and oil dripping is not normal.

Hello, it is not quite that easy. In order to change the seal, you need to take the crank apart. If you are into it that far, you should do a complete engine rebuild. Just do a search on leaking rotary valve seal. Lots of info with some other options on how to deal with it, ie just use it as is.

No, you do not need to take the crank apart. Minnetonka4me has just informed me a couple weeks ago, that you just need to take the rv cover off and you can pull it out with a rv puller or you can make a puller. It can all be done without removing your motor. The airbox, flame arrestors and carbs will need to be removed. And if you pull it out you may as well just replace it.

I think the RV seals on the crank that fail filling up the crankcase with oil. That is why it pukes out oil when it starts. Not sure about the rotary valve seal, but I could be wrong.

There is only one rv seal, it is next to the end of the rv gear itself. It is where the main oil line feeds in. You are talking about the crank seals. My suggestion is a $15 part. Try that first. Robj's theory is a minimum crank rebuild of $275 and then having to pull the entire motor and at that point you are going to do a full rebuild which then you would need to buy an alignment tool and a full gasket kit. Rule out the rv seal first then go from there.

Sorry about the blurry pictures

It is the black peice towards the right
