I have done this on my Old 1994 Spx and now my 1997 GSX..

Not sure if there are any other threads about this I looked hard and only could find this one...

Its true there is play in the steering column. You can wiggle the handle bars from left to right and up and down. It really pisses you off when riding. You feel like they are going to snap.

There is a Easy Fix.

I call it the:cheers: Beer Can Fix.

I will try my best to show you images. All skis are differnt, my 94 spx was all internal so it was pretty hard to get the steering all out.

First you need to get all the handle bar padding off.
Second undo the 4 bolts that hold the steering column on.
Third Undo the steering Linkage.

You need to get to the point where you can pull the handle bars out of the port it rides in..

The reason the "Play" happens is because of the wear over the years. The steering grinds the plastic down so it starts to get play. Its a mess in the column on the old skis. They just need love.

You need to take this off. This has ribs and groves that need cleaning.

^ There are two surfaces where you are getting the play from. The Top and bottom holders of the stem.

The smooth areas on the stem is were it rides inside the holders. Just metal on plastic.

My only answer was a sleeve. so I used a beer can cut it down and greased it up.

Grease is the Key to the steering Column with the can it lets it move without sound or to much stifness.

I used a beer can because it was the right space + wont rust.

Let me tell you its like a brand new steering column.

Here are the images from my GSX.. Sorry i didnt use a beer can on this one.. Only what I had.

The beer can has been in my Spx for 3 years with no problems, Hope the coke can works.

Sorry I did add two differnt sleeves but i forgot to take alot of pictures becaue my hands were greasy. As you can see the can fits right in. Greased up and done. Works great.

I dunno that is how I fixed mine. seems to work.
