Oil tank grommets

So, I've had this oil leak and I finally traced it back to the oil tank vent check valve being shot. So I ordered a new one and figured I'd change the grommet on the sending unit while I was in there.

I am having extreme difficulty changing the grommet. Are there different sizes of these grommets? On the parts diagram for the ski it appears that the grommets for both the sending unit and the outlet fitting are the same part number. The old grommet came off easily but the new one I had a he11 of a time stretching it over the float and now I can't get the sending unit to go back in. Seems like the new grommet ID is slighltly smaller. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm about ready to say screw it and just put the old one back in

Put the grommet in the tank first. Then with a little lube like windex or spit push in the fitting or sending unit.

If you put the grommets on the fitting first it won't go in. And don't reuse the old one or it will just leak again.

Thanks Miki. So then, do you think I have the correct grommet? I tried both ways grommet in the tank first nd grommet on the sending unit. It makes sense to me to put the grommet in the tank first

Maybe I should just take the oil tank out and replace them both. I am going to have to clean the hull out now anyway because there is oil everywhere. I can replace the lower one on the outlet fitting then too.

Still haven't figured out why it isn't running good either. Sigh...it never ends with these things, does it?

Well I finally got it to go in. I put it about halfway on the sender and got it started in the tank hole and with a lot of wiggling/pushing it finally went in. Fit's nice and tight now. I really think the oil leak was from the breather check valve. Air would go both ways and I could see where the oil had sprayed out of it. There must be a good bit of oil circulation from the rotary valve cavity when the engine is running.

If oil goes both ways that is bad.
I haven't seen a used seadoo that didn't need new grommets.

Also the 2 piece tanks always leak at the seams.

I'm lucky to have a one piece oil tank. I think 96 was the only year that had a one piece. I have the other grommet for the outlet nipple. Once I burn through this tank of oil, I'll pull the tank and change that one too. I was able to get the sender back in w/o pulling the tank
