Oil sensor grommet is TIGHT - remove oil tank?

Hey everyone, trying to replace my oil sensor grommet which sits on top of the oil tank of my ‘97 gts. Are they supposed to be very tight? We can’t get it on for the life of us while the tank is in the ski, but if we push any harder we feel the tank will crack. Obviously it was covered in 2 stroke... that didn’t work. We put it in hot water, still didn’t help. I assume this job needs to be done with the tank out of the ski? If so does anyone have any tips?

Never tried in the ski but I just put one in out of the ski on a gsx.It was pretty tight but I put the grommet in tank, then the put some oil on the sensor and it went in after some wiggling.

I was replacing a 2 piece leaking oil tank with a one piece.

Yes they are very tight and almost impossible to do in the ski.

What is the process to pull out the oil tank? Gas tank out first I assume?
