Oil filter cap o rings

Ok, so I'm gonna be changing the oil in a 2006 GTI SE this weekend and winterizing it.
This will be my first time doing it myself, it's my sister's Sea Doo and while it was under warrenty, she always paid the dealer (around $225) for this.
I have a question about the placement of the thinner of the large O rings.
I know that the tiny one goes under the cap bolt and the larger of the other two goes in the groove on the side of the cap.
But my question is, where does the smaller of the two large o rings go?
One post I read says that it goes up under the edge of the cap and another said to put it on top of the filter.
Can anyone shead a little light on this for me?
