No spindle washer on my trailer?

This trailer that came with the 97XP I bought was in dire need of new bearings, I could move the wheel up and down and side to side about an inch. Took it apart this morning, first time changing wheel bearings on one of these trailers, changed bearings in cars though. Anyways, when I got it apart there was no spindle washer and so far every video I’ve watched there was a spindle washer. How do I know if it was just forgotten last time or if it isn’t supposed to have one? By the way, there was no outer bearing, it just disintegrated, I found chucks of the old needle bearing in there and I’m guessing the piece I took out that was behind the castle but was the inner part of that bearing. Hopefully I can get a number off of the inner bearing otherwise do I just measure the spindle in order to know which bearings to get? I guess I could always take the other side apart and get the number me from that side.
IMG_5077.jpegThis is all that there was before I took the hub off, should I put a spindle washer on, even though there wasn’t one there?

Just in case someone comes across this thread someday, For my pwc trailer the spindle measured .9925” , there are also trailers that have spindles that measure 1.06” and they take bearing L44649, but this trailer had the 1” spindle, and used bearing L44643 for both the inner and outer bearing, both inner and outer race is L44610, double lip seal was #34823, I noticed some water in the side that wasn’t bad. I think I’m going to get some bearing buddy’s.

Timken SET 4 is for the 1.06". Timken SET 14 is for the 1.00". Amazon has them for under $10. I don't buy cheaper no name bearings. If I change one, I change them all. My trailer spindle didn't have enough indexing holes to get the proper end play, .001” to 0.005”. It was either too tight or twice the recommended play. I had some more washers and I found by stacking two I could get the proper clearance. I have seen too many trailers sitting on the side of the freeway.

I seen the Timken SET14 at Rock auto for 12.40 CDN I believe it was, included 1 bearing and 1 race, I would have had to source out the double lip seal separately. I also seen a kit on Amazon for 29.99 CDN that had everything to do both sides but I don’t trust Amazon so I went to Napa and bought 2 kits at 18.99 a piece. Once I opened the box, the bearings said made in China right on them. I’m hoping there is some quality control in place but I guess we will see. If they don’t last, I will get some Timken bearings and also thinking of adding bearing buddies. I might make it a routine to take the bearings out at the end of the season to clean and re pack everything. I will need some extra double lip seals if I go that route

4 Timkens and 2 National seals cost me $60 US. I also replaced the bearing buddies since they were out. Also I replaced the 1997 tires first. The ski has been to the other side of the state and back a few times, 280 miles each way . Sure it was twice the price of the no name cheaper kits but I don't want want to be thinking of the trailer and just enjoy the drive.

If I was travelling longer distances I would do the same but I’m usually only towing it 2 kilometers to the river so I didn’t mind taking a chance on the Napa kits
