Recently rebuilt the engine on a 2001 RX, after fighting with it for months I think I have finally gotten everything correct, to include bogging (I think). The issue I am having now is when I go WOT the hole shot doesn't seem strong, the RPM's shoot up like the engine is going all out but it takes a second to really feel like your moving like the RPM's say and engine sounds. When in mid range power steering also lacks, does not feel tight or crisp. The ski idles fine and runs WOT fine. I am thinking its the jet pump, it was in rough shape when I rebuilt it and I also noticed it has a slow leak where the impeller is screwed on. What is everyone's thoughts? I will eventually replace the whole pump but what happens if it breaks (due to lack of oil or water contamination), does it seize up or just stop spinning the impeller. I'm more concerned about the damage it could do to the engine rather than the damage it would do to itself.

Sounds like cavitation. Check wear ring and impeller.

Edit: I guess it would help to finish reading your post. Lol. If I knew of a pump problem, I would recommend fixing it and not risk any damage to the rest of the system. Shaft, carbon seals, hull or even engine.

Update, got someone to push out old seal and bearings... the guy that did the work for me said bearings didn't look bad and he didn't think that was the issue... New wear ring is installed and impeller does not look bad, though is probably the original one. However before I replaced the engine I don't believe it had this problem. Any other ideas what could make the steering feel mushy at a mid range.... and having so much cavitation?

Drive shaft seal.
Carbon seal
Stainless ring and boot.
Replace these items and cavitation should be gone.

I believe the drive shaft seal fixed the issue. Thanks! It looked like it was worn a little uneven. I do still notice with this ski it tends to bog down when you grab the throttle when first started up after sitting, after it warms up bog is gone. Any ideas? Also already replaced fuel pump accelerator diaphragm
