newbie needs help

Hi everyone. I just got a 97 Challenger and after fixing the VRT cable (bolt was missing on the cable end of the control box) I backed it in the lake and I have a bad water leak around the gasket for the muffler exhaust pipe coming through the hull. The gasket is torn upon closer inspection. What is the procedure to replace it? Since I am new to the Sea Doo jet boats anything else I should be aware of? Fuel guage isn't working either but that's not a big concern at this point. Sorry about the long post but I figure the only dumb question is the one you DON'T ask.

gasket leak

I have 96 and mine has a rubber boot and hose clamp the seals it around the pipe. It is molded so a chrome ring goes around the pipe and boot and seals it to the transom with like six bolts. If water is coming in from around there check the bolts and maybe you have a torn boot.

Yes the gasket is torn. I am looking for instructions on how to replace it.

easy

Take off hose clamp around exhaust tip on out side of tramsum. Remove all bolts holding the rubber boot on. Slide off. Install new one. I used a thin layer of black rvt on the boot where it buttons up to the transon when I replaced mine.

You may need to pull the water box out and slide the muffler out to get the nuts on the inside of the transom. I had to.

Thanks Glen. New to jet boats and can't find anywhere online to help out with details. I was hoping I could do this w/o pulling the muffler. Is the muffler hard to get out and what is the "water box"? Looks to me like the muffler will come out by loosening the hose clamp ad sliding it out? Mine has a couple of zip ties holding hoses in the way too.

My boat has little keg looking thing (I try and relate things to beer ) that couples to the pipe/stinger. Mine has a water regulator on it while others do not. I call this the water box. I then have a "muffler" (I call it that anyway) that sits on top of the water box. This "muffler" is what has the pipe that goes thorugh my transom. All i had to do was remove the black rubber strap from around the water box that holds it to the bilge, uncouple the the water box to the pipe, and water box to the muffler. Now water box is out. I then, as mentioned before, removed the clamp from around the rubber boot out side the transom and around the exhaust pipe. Now the "muffler slides out. You now have complete acess to the boot and ring that bolts it to the transom. Hope this helps.

Not a bad thing to repair at all. Less then 1 hour from start to finish.
