New engine questions....

Ok, so I almost have my new engine from SBT installed and I have a couple of questions.

1. Is there anything that needs to be primed before I try to start it or will it prime itself pretty quickly?

2. I have read to add 20z. of oil to every gallon of gas to get the proper pre-mix ratio for the break in period. Does this sound about right? 80oz of oil for my 40 gallon tank.

3. SBT sent their own brand of break in oil. I have read where many members here say not to mix oils. I would assume it should be safe for the break in period.

4. It seems as there are a million different theories on break in procedures. I will probably just vary the throttle for the first tank with plenty of cooling time along the way and no full throttle. Then the second tank hopefully be ready to go. Any input on break in procedures?

5. I am sure I am missing something. Please fill in. :)

Thanks for any input.

You don't say so but I'll assume your on the injector pump still. If so, just adjust your cable to your oil injector pump to run the motor a tad rich in oil. If you are running a synthetic oil, I think I'd rather break in with that oil verses theirs. I used the oil in the past. I actually called about it. The oil is not just oil. It's a special blend they formulated just for breaking in and seating rings. I think you can do it either way.

According to the size of the tank, you quoted as 40, the amount of oil is 102 oz for a full tank. But, you don't need to run a full tank, just run half that or just pour that one quart of oil they send to you in a half tank of gas. This will be really diluted but the additives they mix will still help seat your rings. This is in assuming that you are using the oil injection still. IF not, let me know and I"ll tell you what ratio oil to gas you need to mix.

Priming?... Yes, the carbs. If you lost all or most of the fuel in your lines, you can take a plastic grocery store bag and put it over the flame arrestor. Then give it a start. As soon as you hear the motor hit, remove the plastic bag. You now have fuel up to the carbs.

When you get the motor started, make sure you check your charging system for proper operation. You want to see between 13.5 to 14 VDC.

You don't mention it and I don't remember (I'm sure you told me before) but what was your "root cause" that caused you to buy this new motor. Remember, if the engine blows, this is the result. You need to make sure that what ever condition caused you to buy the new motor, is taken care of before you start this new one.

You got the throttle variation right. Do not jump on WOT till you have run at least 3/4 of your tank. Make sure you do not hold the throttle steady in one spot for more than 30 or 40 seconds at a time.......

The pulsing makes the fuel move along pretty well, pour a couple coffee shop spoons of premix into the spark plug holes to save heating up the crankiong motor. The mixing oil problem comes when they are poured into the tank together, with their stuff in the gas it should not matter with the other one running in the OEM oiling system, be sure it is drinking and be sure the carb/fuel problems have all been fixed as Snipe pointed out - lean burnout is how it happens, you will now move the throttle up and down like crazy to make yourself seasick then run it hard after half an hour of shaking the hull water.
