New Boat, Big Problem

We sucked up a ski rope today. We couldn't get it out, so we were towed in. Not very far, but I didn't have a clamp for the line. I ended up pinching it with pliers for the 1/4 mile pull. The guy went slow, but I was worried some water could have sucked in. While I went to get the boat trailer, the guys I was with got the rope out. (It did tear up the plastic piece, but that doesn't worry me.) I'm concerned because they tried to crank it. Now it won't start. I was going to pull the plugs and see if anything was in there, before I tried to crank it.

Does anyone think this could be serious? Can it sit overnight? This is in salt water, and it's been like this for four hours.

Not sure if your non starting issues are related to being towed in and clamping hose wih only pliers. My maual say unless you are being towed above 24 kn/h or 15MPH it is NOT even needed to clamp off water supply hose. Good Luck and let us know what is going on. Also (dumb question) have you tried another set of plugs...

I'd pull the plugs, get some wd-40 down there, see if she'll kick over at least, get water out, if in there...

I think it'll be ok. I pulled the plugs, sprayed WD40 in there and fired it up. It cranked and ran, so it'll probably be ok. It did run a little rough, but that was more than likely the WD40. I'll try it again in the morning.

The collar on the shaft in front of he impeller is still damaged, so that'll have to be fixed. I've only got 7 hours on it. I thought I'd be able to make a few trips before I started tearing it up. oh well... it's only money... I'll make more.

So I was thinking about replacing the plastic sleeve on the drive shaft (my schematic calls it the Impeller Boot Assembly) myself if the boat cavitates when I test run it this afternoon. I've been reading all the posts I can about this, and I'll download the manual if I decide to do it, but it looks pretty simple.

Do I just remove the four bolts holding the impeller housing to the pump support to expose the boot assembly. Then unscrew the boot assembly, replace bad part and neoprene seal and reassemble?

Am I on the right track?

Thanks

I didn't have to replace anything but the impeller boot, you are right on track with your description.
I haven't been able to test mine yet due to my work.

New Boat... No Problem

Well I water tested the boat, and it ran fine. It got on plane easily. There was no vibration, no noises. I guess it's ok.

Should I go ahead and replace the gouged boot assembly? Anyone know if this can cause any long term damage? I don't really want to remove the pump, but if it's the best thing to do I will.

Thanks

yes change the boot. it is there to try to seal the salt water out of the impeller splines. you could get away with a few more trips in it before you do it, but don't leave it over the winter. simple to do. remove pump, pop out the boot (usually 2 pieces-outer and inner) grease up good and replace. be sure to use sealer when you reinstall the pump. nice thick bead of silicone around where the wear ring contacts pump support. otherwise it will suck air there when pulling up on plane.
