So I just bought a 1998 Speedster.....guy claimed both engines were rebuilt in fall. When we took it out when I was going to buy it the one engine didnt start right up and he said it was the plugs...and then at WOT the other one would cut out...he said it may be the carbs...I didnt think anything of it. Thought maybe id throw some new plugs in it and have a carb re-build, no biggy. I took it out in the river locally and took 30min to get the one motor started, then at WOT the other one would shut off but it seemd to have gotten worse then when I took it out with the guy trying to sell it. I just dropped it off at Don's Kawasaki in Hallam, PA and they are telling me that I should sink the boat....that apparently the previous owner had it in salt water and BOTH motors need replaced. The carbs are so corroded that they dont know if they can even get them off the block.

What should I do? I was thinking of having them do a carb rebuild, and me just getting a complete top end rebuild....please chime in with any input of what you would do in this situation...they told me I was looking at 3-5k for them to repair everything...I priced out remanufactured motors and from SBT, I can get both motors for 2,095.90 shipped.....

HELP!

geta manual learn to work on them yourself.... salt water WILL kill a boat if it is not taken extremely good care of...I would call the guy back ask him to go in half with you... afterall he did lie out his teeth... and find some "good" rebuilt carbs on e-bay and doo it all your self... more than half what the dealer wants gauranteed is labor prolly @ $100/hr or so

Thats what I was thinkning...I had a 96 Speedster and did the jet pumps, wear rings, and impellers on that....will the manual tell me how to do a top end replacement? Or is there anything on here with pictures and step by step...I have done a ton of LS1 motors in cars and done heads and cams and intakes....is this any different or harder? If I have pictures and details I can do anything....I really just wanna do the carbs and top end and leave it at that....I think it will be fine if those couple things are done.

yup... the manual is bad ace for sea doo, furthermore look on the home page or up at the top under how to, millions of posts on it...only a lil "harder" to work on because the tight space... but technically easier... just like with cars take your time it will pay off.... you could prolly do a top end rebuild in a few days...including the time you'll need to have the cylinders resleeved, or bored over, and crappy ole work!!!

How hard is it to remove and re-install these engines....I have never done it before. The most mechanical work I have done on these boats is a jet pump, and wear ring....I have the manual and it does walk me through the majority of it, i mean if i can follow that is that all i need to do? The one shop want 2547.00 to do a R&R........ :(

holy shat...should be pretty do able, hav'nt had the luxury...yet....i do know where shims are placed before the remove shims should be when you reinstall so mark them...do work
