Just recently bought a Sea Doo "project" and need sorting this fine mess out. OK here's what I got. I got a 94 XP hull and it's in real good shape, and the guy put in a rebuilt 587 yellow motor but kept the original 687 electrical....I think(gray slim box beside the gas tank). This new motor has dual carbs on it which I'm not so sure it belongs....or does that matter? The starter turns it over and there's good equal compression but that's about it. I think the rotary valve is timed correctly. I was told that the motor and the electrical are not compatible. Should I just give up and part this baby out or is there a simpler solution. Thanks in advance.

Wow.......in a basket?

Yeah, working on mods like this is hard, especially with the age because finding parts to cross over with are hard to come by.

Looking at the electrical systems in the 93 shop manual, the 657 and 587 motors both used the same magneto (160 watts at 6000 rpm) system and CDI ignition. But, there are the two 587 motors, the white and yellow. The difference between them was mostly electrical. So, without much more to go on (I'm at work now and can't access all my spec sheets) I can't tell you ya or na.

I can say that if all the plugs from the two different system all connect with no wires left over, then chances are, you got a compatible system.

I hope that helps a bit. I'll see if I can put together the two differences of the yellow and white engines tonight, when I get off........
